Jerry in Lakeland was having continual problems with mold, grime, and debris getting into his deeply pitted travertine. His main concerns were reducing the amount that was growing in the pits of the travertine and to keep the natural look of the travertine.
He did not want the color enhanced or a shine. We discussed all of the sealer options for travertine and based on his desires recommended a penetrating stone sealer with a natural finish.
We spent lots of time preparing the travertine for sealing through extensively cleaning using contractor grade detergents being sure the pits were thoroughly clean and free of debris. When using a penetrating sealer we usually do not fill the joints with sand, as this sealer does not harden or stabilize the sand.
Also, typically travertine is installed with tight, or small joints. After cleaning, we applied the penetrating sealer which will repel water and moisture making the travertine easier to clean and inhibit the mold, grime and debris. It also did not change the color of the travertine.
In this video, I discuss the finish and natural look of a penetrating sealer along with its water repelling property. Penetrating sealer is different from a form filming sealer that we use on pavers. Although, the travertine looks not sealed it is fully protected from Florida’s harsh weather conditions.
